Getting married in Bali, Fiji, New Zealand or Europe? Your guests will still arrive with cards — and you'll still need somewhere safe to put them. The trouble is that a solid wooden wishing well is heavy, bulky and easy to damage in checked luggage.
The simple answer is a flat-pack paper wishing well box. It folds down to about 3 cm thick, goes together in a minute or two at the venue, and — just as importantly — folds flat again after the reception so you can bring it home. Here's what to look for, how to pack it, and how to keep your cards safe while you're away.
Do you need a wishing well at a destination wedding?
Usually, yes. Destination weddings tend to be smaller, but guests who've flown to be with you still like to give something — and carrying a wrapped gift overseas is a hassle for them. A card with a monetary gift is the easiest option for everyone, which makes a wishing well even more useful abroad than at home.
It also solves a practical problem: without a box, cards end up in handbags, jacket pockets and hotel rooms, and some never find their way back to you.
What makes a good travel wishing well
- Packs flat — it should lie flat between your clothes, not take up half a suitcase.
- Lightweight — baggage allowances are tight enough already.
- Quick to assemble — no tools, no fuss on the morning of the wedding.
- Folds flat again afterwards — the trip home matters as much as the trip there. A box that only goes together once has to travel back full size, or be left behind.
- Sturdy once assembled — it needs to hold its shape on a gift table all evening.
- A proper card slot and lid — so envelopes go in easily and stay in.
- Personalised — your names and date make it part of the styling, not an afterthought.
- Worth keeping — after the wedding it should become a keepsake box for your cards and mementos.
Why not a wooden wishing well?
Engraved wooden wishing wells are beautiful, and for a wedding at home they're hard to beat. For travel, though, they have real drawbacks: they're heavy, they can't be folded, and a corner knocked in transit is difficult to fix once you've landed. If you're comparing materials for a wedding in Australia, see our guide to wooden vs acrylic wishing well boxes.
For a destination wedding, a paper box gives you the same personalised look at a fraction of the weight — and nothing to worry about at check-in, in either direction.

Not a one-use box: it folds flat again
This is the part most couples don't think about until the night is over. Our boxes come apart as easily as they go together, so after the reception you can take the cards out, fold the box flat in a minute or two and slide it back into your suitcase — the same 3 cm it was on the way there.
Once you're home, assemble it again and it becomes a keepsake box for your cards, invitations and photos from the trip. Or keep it flat in a drawer until you want it out — it doesn't need to take up shelf space in the meantime.

How to pack it
- Keep it flat and slide it against the back panel of your suitcase, with clothes on either side to protect the corners.
- Pack it with your other styling pieces — signs, guest book, place cards — so everything for the gift table travels together.
- Assemble it the day before, at your hotel or villa — it only takes a minute or two — so it's ready to hand to your coordinator.
- Fold it flat again after the wedding, with the cards taken out and packed separately in your carry-on.
Keeping cards and cash safe overseas
- Put one person in charge. Ask a family member to keep an eye on the box during the reception and take it to your room at the end of the night.
- Keep it under cover. Paperboard is sturdy but not waterproof — at a beach or garden reception in a tropical climate, place it under a marquee or indoors, away from rain and sea spray.
- Carry the cards home in your hand luggage, not in checked bags.
- Know the cash rules. If you're bringing physical cash back into Australia, amounts of AUD 10,000 or more (or the foreign-currency equivalent) must be declared.
- Offer a digital option. A small sign with a QR code or bank details beside the box makes life easier for guests who don't carry cash — see our wedding wishing well guide for how couples combine the two.

Order before you fly
Every box is personalised to order in Melbourne. We send a digital proof within 1 business day; once you approve it, production takes 1–3 business days, with dispatch from the next business day. We recommend ordering at least 2–3 weeks before you leave so there's plenty of time for delivery within Australia.
Melbourne couples can also collect from our Caulfield showroom. Getting married in New Zealand? We ship there directly. For other countries, have your box delivered to your Australian address before you fly — or get in touch and we'll let you know what's possible.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a flat-pack wishing well box in my carry-on?
Folded flat, our boxes are only about 3 cm thick — 35 × 25 cm for medium, 35 × 32 cm for large and 31 × 31 cm for the printed box — so they fit inside most cabin bags. Size limits vary between airlines, so check yours, or simply pack it flat in your checked luggage between clothes.
How long does it take to assemble?
A minute or two.
Can I fold it flat again after the wedding?
Yes — that's the point. It comes apart just as easily as it goes together, so it travels home flat, and you can assemble it again whenever you like.
How many cards does a wishing well box hold?
Our medium-size boxes hold well over 50 cards, which suits most destination weddings. For a larger guest list, choose a large size.
Will a paper box hold up in a humid climate?
Yes, for an evening on a gift table — just keep it under cover and out of rain or spray.
What wording should we use?
Many destination couples ask guests to contribute to the honeymoon or the trip itself. You'll find ready-to-use lines in our wedding wishing well wording guide, including a full section of honeymoon wishing well wording.
