You've found a welcome sign you love — but the sample says "Emma & James", and your names are "Alexandra & Christopher". Will the same font still look elegant? Will the capital A loop the way you hoped? Will it fit on one line?
Choosing a design from a sample photo is one of the hardest parts of ordering anything personalised. The good news: you don't have to guess. Here's how to choose fonts and designs with confidence — and how to see your own names in our designs, free, at our Caulfield showroom.
Why your names never look quite like the sample
Sample designs are made to look their best, usually with short, balanced names. Real names behave differently:
- Length changes everything. A long first name or a double-barrelled surname can push a script font onto two lines, or shrink it to fit.
- Capital letters vary most. In flowing script fonts, letters like A, F, J and K can look very different from the sample — sometimes beautiful, sometimes hard to read.
- Letter combinations matter. Double letters, "ll", "tt" and names ending in y or g can change how a script font flows.
- Size and material change the feel. A font that looks delicate on screen can look very different laser-engraved in timber or printed on a large foam board.
How to choose a font for your wedding sign or gift
1. Decide on the mood first
- Script — romantic and classic; ideal for names.
- Serif — timeless and formal; suits traditional invitations.
- Sans-serif — clean and modern; easy to read from a distance.
2. Pair a script with something simple
The most reliable combination is a script font for your names and a clean serif or sans-serif for everything else — date, venue, guest names. Two fonts is plenty; three starts to look busy.
3. Think about reading distance
A welcome sign is read from a few metres away; a seating chart from about a metre. Fine, flowing script is lovely for a heading but hard to read in a long list of names. For seating charts, see our seating chart guide.
4. Match your invitations
If your welcome sign, seating chart and guest book share the same fonts as your invitations, the whole day looks considered. Bring an invitation with you, or a photo of it.

- Compare fonts side by side with your own names, not a sample's
- Try different layouts — names on one line or two, with or without a monogram
- Change colours to match your palette
- See the materials in person — acrylic, mirror, timber and printed foam board all look different in real life than on a screen
- Check the size against real signs, so you know what an A1 seating chart or a large wishing well actually looks like
It takes the guesswork out of the decision — and it's usually the moment couples stop going back and forth.
Laser engraving on the spot
Once you've chosen your design, many laser-engraved pieces — keepsake boxes, guest books, wishing wells, pens and compact mirrors — can be engraved right there in the showroom. It takes about an hour, so you can grab a coffee nearby and come back to collect it.

What to bring to your visit
- Exact spelling of every name, including any accents or hyphens
- Your wedding date and the date format you prefer
- Your invitation, or a photo of it
- Your colour palette — a photo of flowers or bridesmaid fabric works well
- For a seating chart, a rough guest count
